Joining

The Q yDNA is open to anyone who has tested at Family Tree DNA and is predicted or confirmed as a member of Q or one of its subclades. Family Tree DNA has affiliations with the following companies and studies.

• African DNA is a Family Tree DNA affiliate. They specialize in helping African Americans discover their ancestry. Their website is www.africandna.com. Those who order a test through African DNA will have a kit number that starts with an A.

• DNA Ancestry & Family Origin is a Family Tree DNA affiliate. Their website is in both English and Arabic. Their website is www.dnaancestry.ae. Those who order through DNA Ancestry & Family Origin will have a kit number that starts with an M.

• Family Tree DNA. The main company site is www.familytreedna.com. Family Tree DNA offers testing for Genealogy and Ancestry to people throughout the world. If you have questions about testing in your country please contact them.

• iGENEA is a Family Tree DNA affiliate. They offer tests throughout Europe. Their website is available in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Their website is www.igenea.com. Those who order a test through iGenea will have a kit number that starts with an E.

• The National Geographic Genographic Project is a five year study. The project's website is www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/. Participants are sent a kit with instructions in ether English or Spanish and an introductory DVD. Once their results are returned, participants may transfer their results to Family Tree DNA. The transfer is free. After they transfer, those who order a test through the National Geographic Genographic Project will have a kit number that starts with an N.

• Go to the company website.

• Enter your user ID and password.

• On your myFTDNA page click on the blue join button.

• Enter M242 in the surname search box.

• Look for the Q yDNA Project in the list of results.

• Follow the link.

• Click on the grey join button.

To transfer your results to Family Tree DNA, first log into your Genographic account. On the results page look for a link that says learn more. Following the link will take you through the transfer process.

Many people, who are new to DNA Genealogy, may inadvertently order a kit through another company.

To enjoy the full benefits of DNA testing for ancestry and genealogy a quality service, ethical privacy policies, continuing research and development, and educational resources are all required. The testing company must provide a suitable comparative database. Commitment from a network of experienced researchers is also needed.

If you tested at another company, Family Tree DNA offers a transfer discount. You will need to order a kit on invoice and fill out a tranfer discount form. The form must be mailed back with your kit and payment.
